NIGERIA (10 days)
Loana Travel offers a unique itinerary that only true Gulf of Guinea experts like us can provide. This journey takes you through a little-explored country, where experiences remain genuinely authentic, contrasts are striking, and the destination embodies both Africa’s past and its future.
This trip will challenge misconceptions about the country’s reputation for danger. In reality, it is one of the most hospitable nations on the continent. Despite its modern advancements as the region’s wealthiest country, it remains deeply rooted in ancestral traditions.
We will travel exclusively through safe regions, while immersing ourselves in the country’s rich and diverse culture. This is one of the most authentic destinations in Africa, where you will experience unforgettable adventures that will leave a lasting impression.
Day 1: Arrival in Lagos
International flight to Lagos. Transfer to the hotel.
Day 2: Lagos
Exploration of Nigeria’s economic capital, a bustling and fascinating metropolis.
National Museum – A perfect introduction to Nigeria’s cultural and ethnic diversity, with a special focus on the Yoruba people, the dominant ethnic group in the southwest, making up 20% of the country’s population.
Stroll through Lagos Island, where colonial and religious buildings reflect British heritage, alongside the lively energy of its bustling markets.
Lunch, followed by a boat trip to Tarkwa Bay, a beachside village that feels surprisingly remote despite being in a city of over 20 million people.
Overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 3: Badagry
A two-hour drive west takes us to Badagry, a charming coastal town known for its historic colonial buildings and faded yet picturesque architecture, offering insight into Nigeria’s past.
Days 4 & 5: Abeokuta
Heading east to Abeokuta, one of West Africa’s most fascinating cities.
Surrounded by lush landscapes and rocky hills, Abeokuta is home to Nigeria’s finest Afro-Brazilian architecture, brought by freed slaves and their descendants returning from Brazil.
Highlights include the sacred Olumo Rock, a revered Yoruba site, where trails lead past Voodoo temples.
Visit to the Juju market, dedicated to Voodoo remedies and ritual items.
Overnight stays in Abeokuta.
Day 6: Ibadan & Ife
En route to Ife, we stop at Ibadan’s vibrant market.
Arrival in Ife, the spiritual heart of the Yoruba people—according to legend, the Yoruba civilization originated here.
Visit to key sites:
Enuwa Square (the city’s main plaza)
Oba’s Palace (Oba means “king” in Yoruba)
Opa Oranmiyan Monolith
Ife Museum
Overnight stay in Ife.
Day 7: Oshogbo
A key stop in Yoruba heritage, featuring:
The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, Nigeria’s only UNESCO World Heritage cultural site.
This last remnant of primary forest in the south of the country is home to the goddess Osun, associated with fertility and represented by the river flowing through the grove.
The site features shrines and sculptures dedicated to Yoruba deities, created by Austrian artist Susanne Wenger, who settled here in 1960.
Rituals and celebrations still take place in the forest, and river purifications are commonly performed.
